Girly Girl

Harper is always growing and learning and it is particularly fun to start a garden with our little Harper. We've been tilling, preparing, planting, watering, weeding, and all of the many other verbs one associates with gardening for the past 3 weeks. Our garden is quite big, and it contains:

12 stalks of corn (2 varieties)
2 rows of yellow onion
1 row of red onion
1 row of green onion
1 row of garlic
a bell pepper
a jalapeno pepper
a Fresno chili
a serrano pepper
a thai pepper
2 rows of arugula
a bed of assorted lettuces
10 tomato plants: various heirloom varieties, including Cherokee purple, green zebra, a lemon boy, Harper's own "girly girl" (an Early Girl), Jack's own "Better Boy", and other beefy, acidic ones and two types of grape tomatoes
2 artichokes
a cabbage
2 watermelon plants
1 honeydew plant
various herbs: chocolate mint, peppermint, spearmint, dill, 4 sweet basil, purple basil, cilantro, Italian parsley, thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano, lavender
boysenberries

Harper loves to help and is learning a lot about growing veggies. In fact, the theme of her "Brighter Vision" set this month is "Growing Things" and it dovetails nicely with our garden experiment. Grandma has subscribed her to these monthly sets and she ADORES them. It's like a little preschool set for home, complete with a craft, hardback book, workbook, and perepheral extras. Speaking of preschools, we're looking into them because Montessori is still a not-sure kind of deal and Harper's ready ready ready. She's starting to read, for josh sakes.
